Women’s Petition – commemorative relief

Pirkko Viitasalo

1989

Bronze

This commemorative relief of a group of women was commissioned to honour the women who in 1966 signed a petition calling for the construction of a new city hospital, pleading in particular for an improvement to the situation of birthers. In four days, more than 21,000 names were collected for the petition. To commemorate the achievement, the city’s culture committee commissioned a relief by sculptor Pirkko Viitasalo to be installed on the façade of the City Hospital.

The relief shows the heads of several women in profile, with their flowing hair trailing behind them, intermingling and forming an undulating horizontal form, the dominant element of the work.
