Aluminium

Councillor of Commerce Pertti Saarinen donated this sports-themed relief to the city of Lahti in September 1984, when Urheilu-Saarinen sports shop celebrated its 30th anniversary. Under the relief mounted on the wall of the sports centre’s stands is a portrait relief of Pertti Saarinen himself.

Nearly eight metres high, Winners is made of cast aluminium. The work depicts four different sports events on four “levels”: on top is a ski jumper, under him a female skier, then a shot-putter and at bottom a running football player. All figures are in motion, each dedicated to their own event and totally immersed in their performance. The result is a vivid, visually fascinating and dynamic whole that triumphantly expresses the highly physical nature of sports.
