Concrete

An open art competition was organised in 2020 to find a work of high artistic quality for the Viiskulma square, a piece that would provide the place a new identity and lead citizens towards the new museum, Malva. The winner was Akseli Leinonen’s proposal Village Gate.

Weighing over 50 tonnes, the monumental piece is 6 metres high and 10 metres wide. It is made of tinted recycled concrete. The gate-like structure has three asymmetrical openings that resemble human silhouettes. The intentionally jagged surface evokes associations with ruins, the past and the passage of time. While exploring the relationship between ourselves and the built urban environment, the work also acts as a delimiting element and landmark in the urban space.
