Jussi Mäntynen

1961

Bronze

In 1961, the Lahti city council decided to purchase a sculpture of three swans by Jussi Mäntynen for its art collection. Located in Fellman Park, the work is the second cast of Mäntynen’s work Up to Glory, originally created for Turku in 1958. Cast in bronze, the work depicts three swans taking flight from the crest of a wave. Their wings spread out, the lofty birds stretch their long necks up towards the sky. The sense of motion and energy sweeps the viewer into a moment of power and departure, and the work redirects the viewer’s gaze from the swans to the sky, creating a lyrical metaphor for the longing for freedom and spirituality.
