The Spirit of Freedom

Red granite

The Spirit of Freedom is located in the courtyard of the Church of the Cross, next to the cemetery of fallen soldiers. It is the resting place of nearly 600 soldiers who died in the Winter and Continuation Wars.

Made of red granite, the Spirit of Freedom is 3.5 metres high and 2 metres wide. It depicts a female figure standing with her hands in the air and her eyes turned slightly to the right. Her left hand is in a defensive pose, as if to repel all evil from her vicinity, while at the same time, she is gesturing in a blessing and inviting way with her right hand. Her face conveys serenity and compassion. The Spirit of Freedom proclaims peace and reconciliation, serving as a powerful tribute to those who fell in our wars.
