Susanna in the Bath depicts a bathing woman trying to avoid a jet of water. The title refers to the story of Susanna in the Book of Daniel, a young wife who bathes while her husband’s friends spy upon her. The men try to lure Susanna into lying with them, and when she refuses, they make false accusations. Eventually, the truth is revealed and the men are sentenced to death while Susanna is acquitted of all charges. The story has often been depicted in Western art. Heikki Nieminen’s sculpture depicts the opening scene of the story, in which the beautiful and innocent Susanna bathes, unaware that she is being watched.
