Statue of Liberty

Viktor Jansson

1920

Bronze

Viktor Jansson’s Statue of Liberty was the first public sculpture in Lahti. Erected in 1920 in front of the town hall, the statue is a tribute to “white” soldiers who died in the 1918 war.

Cast in bronze, Statue of Liberty is 3.7 metres high. It depicts a naked young man gesturing into the distance with his raised left hand. In his right hand, he is holding a helmet. Inscribed on the base of the statue are the names of fallen civil guards and the text: “To defend your home and your fatherland.” The work shows the influence of classical sculpture, clearly indicated by the naked, idealised body of the young male figure and its carefully designed traditional pose. In keeping with the tradition of ancient sculpture, Statue of Liberty also expresses military heroism and greatness of soul embodied in a shell of apparent serenity and dispassion.
