Oskari Jauhiainen

1954

Bronze

Depicting a group of swallows gliding over water, Speed by Oskari Jauhiainen was erected in the middle of Pikku-Vesijärvi lake in Lahti. It was originally placed in the market square, at the site of a communal well in what was once the village of Lahti. Back in the 1950s, the dynamic nature of the piece symbolised the booming town of Lahti. As the title suggests, the key theme is speed and movement. The sculpture was moved to its current location in 1961.
