Viktor Jansson

1937

Bronze

Snowball Fight was the first public sculpture in Lahti that carried no political message. The work was erected in 1937 in Koulupuisto park, in the square between the Lahti Lyceum and coeducational schools. The location was suggested by artist Viktor Jansson himself.

As its title suggests, the playful sculpture depicts a boy and a girl in the heat of a snowball fight. The children’s outfits are very 1930s: the girl is wearing a skirt and long socks, and the boy is dressed in breeches, a jacket, a cap and long socks. The children’s postures and twisted bodies, arrested in a moment of vigorous movement, bring a sense of action to the sculpture. The work epitomises youth, childlike zest for life and the ability to throw oneself into the moment.
