Pentti Papinaho

1969

Bronze

This abstract relief was unveiled at the inauguration of the new Lotila school building on 9 October 1969. Measuring almost 3 metres high and 7.5 metres wide, the bronze relief was designed by artist Pentti Papinaho.

The work is dominated by vertical elements with cell-like shapes between them. There are smooth, polished surfaces in the work as well as rough, grooved ones reminiscent of tree bark. The interplay between the two textures and between the round and sharp shapes creates tension and energy in the work. Connotations of cells, trees, growth and life forms link the work to its primary school setting – to the contexts of learning and growing.
