Monument to the Reds

Jouko Jokela & Vihtori Ahponen

1949

Granite

Reds at the Hennala prison camp who died of disease, starvation and execution in 1918 were buried in a mass grave located in the area. A memorial unveiled on 15 May 1949 now occupies the site. The granite monument was designed by Jouko Jokela and its relief by Vihtori Ahponen. The inscription on the granite reads: “They fell victim to their ideals in their quest for a better future.” Ahponen’s relief depicts three figures in profile: two children and their mother by a burial mound, holding hands with downcast eyes. The subject of the relief is the loss and grief felt by relatives for their loved ones who died in the civil war.
