On 19 June 1877, the entire village of Lahti was destroyed by fire. It is said to have started in Marola house, which is why a plaque commemorating the event was mounted in the market square at the corner of Marolankatu and Aleksanterinkatu streets. The dry wooden shingles on the roofs were easily ignited in the windy conditions on the day of the fire, leading to the destruction of hundreds of buildings. No people died or were injured, however. After the fire, the development of Lahti took off with renewed vigour. The State awarded funds for the reconstruction of the village, and the very next year, Lahti received the privileges of a trading town.
