A memorial to war veterans was unveiled at the Lahti Sports Centre in 1988. It features a text explaining the history of the memorial: “LONG LIVE FINLAND – In this place veterans of our wars 1939–1945 gathered for the first National Veterans’ Day on 27 April 1987. This memorial was erected by the veterans of our wars in the Lahti region on 3 June 1988, together with Knights of the Mannerheim Cross.” Since the unveiling of the memorial, Veterans’ Day is celebrated annually on 27 April, the day the Lapland war ended.
