Yrjö Liipola

1946

Bronze

Factory owner Aukusti Asko-Avonius donated this statue to the town of Lahti in 1946. Designed and financed by himself, it was erected in the City Hall park, opposite Statue of Liberty a year later. The statue was made by sculptor Yrjö Liipola.

Labour depicts a man taking a moment from felling trees. He is shown wiping sweat from his forehead and resting his axe on a tree stump. The statue symbolises Lahti as a city of timber industry and carpentry. Asko-Avonius wanted it to express the post-war ideology: the significance of work and the continuation of life and industry, rather than general idleness in society.
