Bronze

The statue of J. H. Erkko was unveiled in 1956, on the 50th anniversary of the poet’s death. The first lines of the poem Song of Häme, which Erkko wrote for his home region, are carved into the granite pedestal.

Born in Lahti, poet Juhana Heikki Erkko (1849–1906) was a prominent advocate of Finnish culture and popular education. In addition to authoring many traditional songs familiar to Finns, he wrote numerous poems, aphorisms, prose and plays during his 30-year career. Erkko was a vocal advocate of Finnish nationalism, which gave his work a strong ideological charge.
