Steel

Radiomäki hill is a culturally and historically important place in Lahti. It is also home to a cluster of sculptures that all belong to local museum collections. Among these works is Gyros IX. Designed by Osmo Valtonen, it consists of interlocking rotating frames made of steel. Not unlike a mobile, Gyros IX is a piece of kinetic art, its appeal arising from the effect of movement. The forms of the sculpture – reminiscent of saucers or satellite dishes – naturally links the work with the focus and environment of the Radio and TV Museum. By its association with the solar system and planets, the work refers to the endless movement of nature and the spatial themes of infinity and eternity.
