Between 1939 and 1944, some 400,000 people were evacuated from Karelia. As a tribute to all those Karelians who had to leave their homes, this monument was erected by the Lahti Karelian Society. The statue was erected in Lahti because it was the largest settlement for evacuees at the time. It was eventually decided to place the monument in front of the Officers’ Club in the former Hennala barracks area. The starting point for the statue was a plaster model made by artist Pekka Asikainen in 1987 and later donated to the Lahti Karelian Society, on the basis of which sculptor Reijo Huttu designed the final monument. The work depicts an elderly Karelian mother with a grown-up daughter and son dressed in their traditional attire.
