Lahti City Hall, designed by architect Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1912, is a monumental building of national importance. The façade of the late Art Nouveau building is made of dark fired brick. Above the portal – the main entrance – are three groups of ornate windows in copper frames that open onto the hall where the Lahti city council meets. Only part of the staggered bell tower is visible from the city hall park, a design to which Saarinen also contributed. On the right side of the portal is a relief depicting Eliel Saarinen designed by sculptor Pentti Papinaho. It was commissioned by the city government in 1973 in recognition of the centenary of Saarinen’s birth. The bronze relief shows the face of the elderly Eliel Saarinen in profile.
