Eetu Salin was an activist in the Finnish labour movement, a journalist, a member of parliament, and a founding member of the Social Democratic Party. He was born in Asikkala and as a young man worked as a shoemaker in Lahti. Salin died a prisoner after the Civil War in 1919. In the centre of the sculpture, a highly stylised human figure stands with arms outstretched. On both sides of the figure are irregular abstracted shapes denoting flames flaring up and to the left. A powerful depiction of his personality and life’s work, the sculpture immortalises Eetu Salin as a figure rising defiantly from the flames.
