After the Battle

Willehard Martin & Urho Heinänen

1920

Granite

The city council of Lahti decided in 1918 to erect a monument to German soldiers who had fallen during the occupation of the city that year. The site of the monument was the old cemetery on Radiomäki hill. A memorial sculpture created by Willehard Martin and his pupil Urho Heinänen was placed in the middle of the German soldiers’ burial ground. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the base, along with their birth and death dates and the text: “For fallen German heroes, Den gefallenen deutschen Helden.” The granite statue depicts an unclothed soldier on his knees. His head is bowed, and he holds a German helmet to his chest with his left hand as his right lowers a sword to the ground.
